Architecture-InsideOut

Exploring creative relationships between disability and architecture

AIO Artists

“Make subverting institutional practice your mission!” Barbara Lisicki, artist

Why Deaf and disabled artists?

Professional artists with a disability often find they have to make a difficult choice; either aim for mainstream recognition by ‘hiding’ their disability - or work explicitly in the area of disability arts and risk being marginalised.

The artists here have participated, or are currently participating in the InsideOut project. They all do work of the highest quality, informed but not determined by their disability, and have particular interests in the impact of the built environment on our lives. We hope that architects, educators and others will take the opportunity to work directly with creative Deaf and disabled people in developing design improvements to the built environment for all its diverse users.

Artists organisations

Architecture-InsideOut is supported by two Deaf and disabled artists organisations who also work directly with a wide range of Deaf and disabled artists, and who can help architects, educators and other agencies develop partnerships with Deaf and disabled artists.

Deaf and disabled artist participants

As Architecture-InsideOut has developed, more Deaf and disabled artists are becoming involved. The artists listed on the left side of this page have all been involved in at least one InsideOut project.
